7 Must-Haves for ROTC and Basic Training

Joining the ROTC is a much different experience than joining the military. When you enter the military, you receive certain military supplies, though these supplies are often limited to covering the basic necessities. For the ROTC, you aren’t likely to receive those same supplies. If you are headed to basic training, you will be given a list of items to bring along with you. Even then, you might want to upgrade to the best tactical boots you can find in order to be more comfortable while still complying with regulations. Here are seven pieces of equipment you will likely need when you join the ROTC or are on the road to joining the military.

Clothes

The first thing you will need is a set of clothes. Make sure you bring casual clothing for the times you aren’t required to wear your uniform. Everyone will also need white, calf-length socks and underwear, and women should bring other specifics like bras, sports bras, and hair bands that match their hair color. You will also want a pair of running shoes for PT and tactical boots, such as the Garmont T8 boots, to wear with your uniform. If you wear eyeglasses or contacts, be sure to bring those as well.

A Lock

The military requires that you have at least one lock for your personal belongings, either a combination or padlock with two keys. If you need more locks, you can always pick them up at the exchange.

Toiletries

You are also required to bring certain toiletries. These include a toothbrush with a case, toothpaste, floss, soap with a case, shampoo, a comb or hairbrush, a towel, a washcloth, deodorant, shower shoes, a razor and blades or disposable razors, shaving cream, and, for women, feminine hygiene products.

Paracord

One of the most versatile tools you can bring to ROTC and basic training is paracord. It can be used in a variety of ways and situations. Paracord, also known as 550 cord, can be used for anything from a trap snare and fishing line to creating a shelter or just tying two objects together. It’s one of those pieces of equipment you never want to be without.

Duct Tape

Duct tape has more uses than you might think as an ROTC cadet or new soldier in basic training. From repairing broken items to binding two objects together to writing on the tape and using it as a label, there are plenty of reasons to have a roll of duct tape readily available. A secondary item can be safety pins, which can also come in handy when you need them.

Wet Wipes

Did you just get back from PT? Are you out training in the field? Bring wet wipes. While nothing can replace the feeling of a proper shower, wet wipes can be perfect for quickly cleaning your gear or yourself, especially in those times when a shower isn’t an option.

Stain Remover

Finally, keeping your clothes clean can be a challenge. If you or someone else accidentally spills something on your clothes in the mess hall, you might not have time to wash or change clothes. Thankfully, that’s where a portable stain remover stick can come in handy. Easy to carry and quick to clean clothes, it can be a lifesaver if you want to avoid having dirty clothes.
