How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Military Uniform

How do you know when it’s time to get new boots or a uniform for service duty? Realistically, you probably won’t want to wait until you get your next clothing allowance. Here are some of the ways you know you should invest in new pieces of military uniform.

Your Boots Start Hurting Your Feet

You should be given an appropriate set of boots during basic training, but they may not be the most comfortable. If they are hurting your feet, it’s a sign the boots are not right for you. Instead, you might want to replace them with Army boots that are not just durable but also comfortable. Make sure they comply with branch regulations, but otherwise, you have the freedom to find the best boots for your feet. Depending on where you are assigned, you may need heavier boots that can withstand the elements or lightweight boots that offer flexibility while still protecting your feet.

Your Uniform Has More than Cosmetic Damage

When your Army combat uniform has cosmetic damage, you are encouraged to mend it rather than replacing it. This can come out of your uniform allowance but note that you may have to pay before the allowance is dispersed. This means you will essentially be reimbursed for the out-of-pocket expenses up to your allowance. However, if there is more than cosmetic damage, such as larger rips, tears, or holes, you may need to replace your uniform. Find a vendor that complies with your branch’s regulations. You may also want to find a uniform made of higher quality material that will resist the rips and tears your previous uniform suffered.

You Can’t Fix Your Boots

Unlike your uniform, chances are, you won’t be able to repair your boots as easily. Whether the eyelets are popping out, the toebox is damaged, or the tread has worn away, you want boots that will keep your feet protected. If damage stops that, it’s time to get new boots. Like the uniform, you may want to splurge and get the best military boots possible, as they will last longer, costing you less in the long run. Plus, they will be comfortable and durable, perfect for when you are patrolling.

You Want Something Higher Quality

You don’t have to wait to replace items if you want something of higher quality, either. In fact, it’s probably a good idea to replace what you got in basic with a higher-quality uniform and boots that fit better and are more comfortable and durable. This way, you have backups should you need them, whether it’s laundry or you need to make repairs. However, repairs are likely to be less often if you get more durable, higher-quality pieces of clothing and boots, making it well worth the price to upgrade before you absolutely need to.
